Currently, there are 163 Indian seafarers aboard 12 commercial vessels located in the Persian Gulf, specifically west of the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Among these vessels, six are flagged under India, while the remaining six are foreign-flagged and are transporting cargo to India.
In addition to this group, over 4,500 Indian seafarers are working on various commercial ships operating in the region. The Ministry of Shipping is actively monitoring the movements of these vessels to ensure the safety and well-being of all seafarers. The MEA emphasizes its commitment to supporting the welfare of the Indian seafaring community abroad, coordinating with embassies and other stakeholders as necessary.
India has consistently condemned acts of violence and attacks on seafarers, which threaten safe navigation through key international waterways like the Strait of Hormuz. The country advocates for dialogue and diplomatic efforts to promote peace, security, and stability in the region.
Furthermore, India has partnered with Liberia to create the Group of Friends on the Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers, highlighting its dedication to maritime safety and the protection of seafarers globally.
