Inmarsat Maritime, a subsidiary of Viasat, has introduced a cutting-edge Maritime Safety Data Hub that offers the maritime industry valuable insights and access to extensive risk analyses affecting global shipping. This innovative platform integrates three years of data from the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) alongside an unprecedented evaluation of 106,975 maritime safety broadcasts from 2025. By analyzing this information, the platform highlights the broader circumstances influencing maritime risks, identifying trends and patterns related to environmental hazards, operational pressures, and geopolitical instability rather than focusing solely on individual incidents.
The study revealed that weather conditions were behind 84.6% of urgent safety messages, with storms accounting for 75% of the cited weather hazards. Furthermore, there were several instances where distress calls originated from areas where prior weather warnings had been issued, indicating the critical role of safety broadcasts in helping vessels anticipate and navigate weather-related challenges.
In 2025, external factors such as disruptions in the Red Sea and geopolitical tensions in areas like the Persian Gulf led to altered shipping routes and increased complexity in operations. Despite a consistent trend in GMDSS calls over the past three years, the nature of threats has evolved, particularly with the rise of electronic interference impacting commercial shipping in key trade regions. The Maritime Safety Hub provides industry stakeholders with a user-friendly tool to explore safety trends and tailor insights to their specific needs, reinforcing the importance of understanding and mitigating maritime risks.
