Lloyd’s Register (LR), Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI), and MAN Energy Solutions (MAN-ES) have joined forces with the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR) to enhance the design for the ammonia dual-fuel operation of an 8200 TEU container ship. This collaboration aims to develop technical specifications and design documents for an ammonia fuel variant of SDARI’s twin island 8200 TEU container ship design, ensuring compliance with safety standards and rules for using ammonia as a marine fuel.
SDARI will lead the next project phase by preparing consolidated specifications and design documentation for the ammonia dual-fuel variant. LR and LISCR will then verify that the design meets safety standards, while MAN-ES will provide data for the design of the engine room and ammonia fuel supply and emission abatement systems. The process will be guided by a rigorous multi-stakeholder Risk Based Certification approach, covering all aspects of the design and intended operational profile of the vessel.
The MOU was signed at LR’s Container Ship Forum at SMM in Hamburg on 5 September. This partnership signifies a significant step towards developing more environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions for the maritime industry. The collaboration between these industry leaders highlights the importance of innovation and cooperation in advancing the design and operation of vessels using alternative fuels like ammonia.
