ClassNK Aligns Alternative-Fuel Ship Guidance With Latest IMO Hydrogen Standards

ClassNK has updated its ‘Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels (Edition 3.1)’, refining safety requirements for vessels powered by methanol, ethanol, and hydrogen. This revision aims to facilitate the design and development of alternative-fuel ships in compliance with international standards.

The update includes the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Interim Guidelines for Hydrogen-Fuelled Ships, introducing a hydrogen leak frequency table for safety assessments. For methanol and ethanol vessels, new structural strength standards for fuel tanks have been established, addressing previously overlooked areas in the IMO guidelines. These additions allow shipyards, designers, and owners to ensure safer, more rational fuel system designs.

As the marine industry shifts toward alternative fuels to combat greenhouse gas emissions, ClassNK has compiled comprehensive safety requirements for various fuel types, including ammonia and LPG. The guidelines stress equipment standards and safety measures to mitigate environmental and operational risks.
