The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has put out a call for businesses in the shipping and fisheries sectors to join the Marine Plastic Litter Global Industry Alliance (GIA). This alliance aims to bring together industry leaders to develop innovative solutions for preventing and reducing ocean plastics, while addressing common barriers to adopting new technologies and approaches. The focus of the alliance will be on marine plastic litter originating from shipping and fisheries activities.
Managed by IMO as part of its OceanLitter Programme, the Marine Plastic Litter GIA will replace the project-specific GIA established under the GloLitter project. This new alliance will include a diverse range of maritime stakeholders, such as shipowners, ports, fisheries industry, recycling companies, technology providers, and class societies. Members will collaborate on developing industry guidelines, tools, and awareness campaigns to address plastic litter in the marine environment.
Companies interested in joining the Marine Plastic Litter GIA are required to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) detailing their rationale for participation, current initiatives addressing marine plastic litter, potential technical expertise or contributions, confirmation of annual membership fee, and any other relevant information. Membership is limited to industry companies, with a focus on commitment to addressing sea-based sources of marine plastic litter and a willingness to actively engage and contribute to the alliance’s objectives.
