Halcyon Health Network Inc. has launched a new mobile phone application called BrainHealth, designed to monitor the health and mental well-being of seafarers before, during, and after their shipboard contracts. The app aims to address the increasing prevalence of mental disorders and suicides among seafarers, with depression now surpassing anxiety as the most common mental health concern.
The app was developed in response to data revealing that factors such as physiological pain, marital, family, and work-related stress significantly impact a seafarer’s mental and physical health. Challenges faced by seafarers, such as isolation, extended periods away from loved ones, and the pressures of life at sea, contribute to heightened stress, anxiety, and depression. The initiative represents a new approach to mental health support for seafarers, aiming to provide accessible resources and foster a culture of openness surrounding mental health.
BrainHealth offers various features tailored specifically for seafarers, including a Mood Tracker for emotional logging, the Wellbeing Atlas with resilience-enhancing courses, and access to Psychosocial Support Groups for peer connection. The program also includes counseling services, monthly Mental Health Talks, and Webinars to help seafarers proactively manage their mental health and access support when needed. The app is available for $24 per user per year on iTunes and Play Store, with medical information accessible only to seafarers.
