The Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool (BMIP), overseen by GIC Re, is set to offer comprehensive war-risk coverage for hull and machinery, as well as cargo. This initiative aims to address the unique insurance needs of the maritime sector, particularly focusing on Indian-flagged or Indian-controlled vessels. Additionally, the cargo coverage will encompass shipments that either originate from or are destined for India.
Under this framework, all insurance policies will be issued by the member companies participating in the pool. This collaborative approach ensures a robust support system for maritime insurance, catering specifically to the Indian market. GIC Re has been designated as the manager of the pool, playing a crucial role in the aggregation of risks, pricing strategies, and claims management.
The operational responsibilities of GIC Re extend to maintaining close collaboration with the underwriting committee, ensuring that the pool functions efficiently and effectively. This strategic partnership is essential for enhancing the overall operational capabilities of the BMIP and providing reliable insurance solutions to stakeholders in the maritime industry.
By offering a full suite of protection and indemnity (P&I) liabilities, BMIP is poised to significantly bolster the maritime insurance landscape in India, addressing both current and emerging risks.
