On May 14, a cargo ship named MSV Salaamath sank in the Arabian Sea, approximately 60 to 70 nautical miles southwest of Mangaluru, Karnataka. The vessel, which had departed from Mangaluru Port on May 12, was en route to Kadmat Island with a cargo of cement, construction materials, and food supplies. The incident occurred around 5:30 AM IST when the ship began taking on water, likely due to flooding, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
All six crew members were promptly rescued by the Indian Coast Guard after being spotted in a dinghy by the merchant vessel MT Epic Susui, which alerted the Coast Guard. The ICGS Vikram, on routine patrol, reached the crew’s location and successfully rescued them by 12:15 PM. The crew members were later identified and provided first aid before being transported safely to New Mangalore Port on May 15.
The local authorities are conducting further interviews with the rescued crew to ascertain the details surrounding the sinking and the possible causes of the flooding, including potential technical issues or severe weather conditions. The Coast Guard is actively investigating the incident.
