Four crew members were successfully rescued after the Indonesian tugboat TB AOM 787 sank near the Anambas Islands in Riau Islands Province, Indonesia, due to severe weather conditions in late July. The tugboat was towing an empty barge toward Serasan when strong winds and high waves compromised its stability. In an attempt to mitigate the danger, the crew severed the towline, but the vessel ultimately capsized and sank.
The crew, including the captain, managed to evacuate into an inflatable life raft and remained adrift for approximately three hours. Their situation was dire until they were spotted by the South Korean-flagged container vessel MV Shanghai Voyager, which detected their distress signals despite the challenging sea conditions.
Upon locating the survivors, MV Shanghai Voyager notified Indonesian search and rescue authorities and altered its course toward Matak. A joint search and rescue team subsequently facilitated the transfer of the crew to safety.
The rescued individuals were taken to Tarempa Regional General Hospital for medical evaluations and were reported to be in good health following the ordeal.
