Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has launched new initiatives at V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Tuticorin, aimed at promoting green energy, digital transformation, and maritime education. These efforts align with the Centre’s goal of establishing VOC Port as one of India’s most advanced and sustainable port ecosystems.

Key projects include India’s first port-based green hydrogen pilot facility, an upcoming green methanol bunkering terminal, and enhanced solar and wind energy capacity. A digital twin platform will facilitate smarter operations, while these ventures support cleaner bunkering and AI-driven port management.

In addition to energy initiatives, Sonowal inaugurated the VOC Maritime Heritage Museum to preserve the port’s historical legacy and maritime traditions. The port is also committed to community development through support for schools and maritime awareness programs as part of its CSR agenda.

VOC Port has implemented a 400-kW rooftop solar plant, now totaling 1.04 MW, with plans for a 6 MW wind farm. It has established EV charging stations and introduced electric vehicles on-site. These actions position VOC Port as a model for sustainable ports, reinforcing Tuticorin’s significance in India’s green shipping corridors and economic development.
