India and Sri Lanka Advance Landmark Deal to Revive Kankesanthurai Port

Kankesanthurai port development deal

Sri Lanka and India are nearing a significant $61 million agreement to develop the Kankesanthurai port in Northern Province, enhancing their bilateral economic cooperation. Located near Jaffna, the port’s strategic importance lies in its proximity to India, and revitalizing it is crucial for improving trade and economic activities in the historically underserved northern region.

Once a bustling hub for passenger and cargo traffic between the two countries, the port fell into disrepair during decades of civil conflict. Its rehabilitation is seen as vital for post-war development in the north, aligning with Sri Lanka’s efforts to attract foreign investment amid its recent financial crisis.

The proposed agreement highlights India’s growing role as Sri Lanka’s key infrastructure partner, extending across energy, transport, and connectivity initiatives. A fully developed Kankesanthurai port could enhance trade between northern Sri Lanka and southern India, promote tourism, create jobs, and strengthen the country’s port infrastructure.

While no official signing has been announced, discussions between Colombo and New Delhi are reportedly at an advanced stage, with both governments eager to finalize the deal. An announcement regarding the agreement is expected in the coming weeks, reflecting the strong diplomatic momentum between the two nations.
