The “Group of Friends on Safety & Security of Shipping & Seafarers” was recently launched to enhance maritime trade safety and security. Co-chaired by India and Liberia, the initiative aims to unite key stakeholders, including major ship-owning states, countries with extensive ship registries, and those supplying a significant workforce of seafarers. The inaugural meeting included representatives from 25 countries who discussed the pressing threats facing commercial shipping.
Recent attacks on vessels have escalated, leading to concerns about the safety of sailors worldwide. These incidents encompass fatalities among Indian shipping personnel and attacks in high-risk areas such as the Gulf of Oman and the Black Sea. The ongoing violence against commercial vessels underscores the urgent need for collaborative international efforts to ensure the security of seafarers while recognizing their humane treatment amidst rising risks.
The coalition addressed three essential goals: enforcing stringent technical standards, protecting commercial sea routes from piracy and instability, and prioritizing the welfare of seafarers. With maritime shipping representing a significant portion of global trade, the group seeks to enhance stability and confidence in an increasingly perilous environment. The partnership between India and Liberia will support the development of maritime policy through established international frameworks.
