The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the creation of an advanced Ship Repair Facility in Vadinar, Gujarat. This initiative represents a significant enhancement of India’s ship repair capabilities, with the potential to reshape the country’s maritime sector.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the project is a collaboration between the Deendayal Port Authority and Cochin Shipyard Limited, involving a total investment of ₹1,570 crore. The Vadinar facility will feature a 650-meter jetty, two large floating dry docks, and various workshops, all designed to optimize repair operations for large commercial vessels.

This venture is set to create considerable employment opportunities, directly generating around 290 jobs and indirectly supporting approximately 1,100 others. The facility is expected to stimulate regional economic growth, enhance the competitiveness of Indian ports, and align with the nation’s long-term maritime objectives as articulated in the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.

This strategic investment underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its maritime infrastructure and expanding its capabilities in the global shipping industry.
