New Delhi, Aug 5: Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced on Wednesday that 4,052 Indian seafarers have been successfully repatriated amid the ongoing geopolitical crisis in West Asia. He led a review meeting with senior officials from the Ports, Shipping, and Waterways departments to evaluate the safety of Indian seafarers during these turbulent times.
The minister highlighted the continuous efforts of the DGCOMM Centre (MMDAC), which operates around the clock to monitor distress signals and coordinate rescue operations. During the crisis, emergency response channels managed 16,448 calls and 40,594 emails, ensuring effective communication and support.
Additionally, the Director General Maritime Administration (DGMA) is providing vital assistance, including repatriation support, medical aid, and counseling for affected families. Under the SWFS Special High-Risk Area Scheme, immediate financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh is being offered to the families of deceased seafarers. Sonowal emphasized that the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is committed to the welfare of seafarers, recognizing them as essential global workers.
In a related incident, an Indian-flagged merchant vessel was struck by a projectile near Yemeni waters, resulting in its sinking. Fortunately, all 14 crew members, including 13 Indians, were rescued by the Yemeni Coast Guard and brought to safety at the Port of Mokha. Sonowal condemned this unprovoked attack, reaffirming the government’s commitment to the safety of its maritime personnel.
