Gujarat is set to enhance its maritime capabilities with plans to develop three greenfield shipyards, an integrated mega shipbuilding cluster, and six new ports along its coast. This initiative represents one of India’s largest expansions of maritime infrastructure, positioning Gujarat as a leading hub for port and shipbuilding activities.
The estimated investment for these projects could exceed Rs 35,000 crore. Ajay Kumar, CEO of the Gujarat Maritime Board, noted that the shipbuilding cluster alone is projected to attract Rs 25,000 crore, bolstered by central government support.
The Gujarat Maritime Board has issued two Expressions of Interest for projects covering over 4,500 hectares. These projects will include shipyards capable of building between 3 to 3.9 million gross tonnes of vessels annually, alongside the new ports being developed under a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer framework.
The shipyards will be located at Mithapur in Devbhumi Dwarka, Ghogha in Bhavnagar, and Vadhera in Amreli, while the mega cluster will be situated at Kuchhadi in Porbandar. This ambitious plan aims to bolster India’s domestic shipbuilding capacity and reduce dependence on foreign facilities, aligning with national maritime manufacturing goals.
