The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has announced that the Port of Colombo has emerged as one of the fastest-growing major container hubs worldwide, handling 4.44 million TEUs in the first half of 2026, an 11.9% increase from the previous year. This growth catapulted Colombo from 26th to 20th place in global rankings, reflecting its strengthening position in international shipping.
In 2025, Colombo achieved a record throughput of approximately 8.3 million TEUs, highlighting its role as a key transshipment hub in the Indian Ocean. The port’s growth is fueled by its integration with global shipping networks linking East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. Strong early indicators for 2026 show a 13.9% rise in volume from January to April compared to the same period in 2025.
The SLPA is committed to expanding Colombo’s capacity and infrastructure, forecasting investments up to US$2 billion over the next few years. This includes enhancing container handling capabilities through public-private partnerships, ensuring the port meets the evolving demands of shipping lines and contributes to regional economic growth. Colombo’s ascent in global rankings signifies its transition into a more vital international maritime hub.
