India’s major ports are functioning smoothly, providing a stark contrast to global supply chain disruptions. Officials confirmed that cargo handling, vessel berthing, and logistics are on schedule with no congestion at key facilities. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority reported handling over 1.2 million TEUs monthly, aided by digital upgrades and increased capacity, reflecting a 12% year-on-year growth.

Other ports are also seeing strong performance. Chennai Port Trust noted full berths for 15 vessels and an 8% increase in cargo throughput. Visakhapatnam cleared 2.5 million tonnes of iron ore last week, thanks to automated cranes from a modernization initiative. Mundra Port reported a 15% rise in liquid bulk cargo, processing petrochemicals and oils efficiently. Smaller ports like Deendayal and Cochin also maintained smooth operations with minimal waiting times.

In contrast, global counterparts face significant challenges, including congestion spikes in Singapore and backlogs in US ports. India benefits from strategic investments, like the ₹7.5 lakh crore Sagarmala initiative, which has enhanced capacity and connectivity since 2015. Digital tools, such as the PORTLIVE platform, have improved efficiency by reducing paperwork and clearance times.

While challenges remain, such as rising fuel costs and geopolitical risks, India’s ports demonstrate resilience, positioning the country favorably in a recovering global trade landscape. With the IMF forecasting a 3.2% growth in 2026, India’s ports are ready to support exporters and importers effectively.
