Goa’s Maritime School in Britona is set to enhance its training offerings with the introduction of 24 new courses focused on yacht operations, water sports, personal craft handling, navigation, lifesaving, and recreational diving. This expansion follows the state government’s approval of a proposal from the Goa Institute of Maritime Excellence (GIME) Foundation. The new courses will be rolled out during a transition phase at GIME’s temporary campus in Kadamba Plateau, Old Goa, while the permanent campus at Britona is still under development. The Captain of Ports has been authorized to issue the necessary administrative orders for implementation, adhering to statutory requirements and the concession agreement.
The expanded program aims to provide comprehensive education and practical training related to Goa’s inland and coastal waters. It includes safety courses for inland vessel crews, revalidation for deck and engine disciplines, and training for personal craft operators. Additionally, operational courses will cover power boat operation, high-speed craft operation, jet ski handling, and crowd management, alongside training for water sports instructors.
Safety and rescue training is a significant component of the new offerings, featuring courses such as lifeguard training, rescue operations, and swimming instruction. Other courses will focus on dinghy sailing, kayak handling, and recreational scuba diving, broadening the school’s focus to encompass both traditional maritime qualifications and specialized recreational activities. The government has also authorized the continuation of existing mandatory training courses at the current facility until the permanent campus is operational, ensuring a seamless transition in training provision.
