The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), a prominent international classification society and a full member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), is making strides to enhance its global presence by opening a new office in Hamburg, Germany. The establishment of this German entity is currently in the registration phase. Recognized by the European Commission since 2016 under Regulation (EC) No. 391/2009, IRS has been actively expanding its international reach and fostering relationships with key maritime markets.
Hamburg, known as a major maritime hub, offers IRS a strategic location to connect with shipowners, managers, shipyards, marine equipment manufacturers, technology firms, and research institutions. The new office aims to strengthen ties with European manufacturers and provide them with access to the burgeoning Indian maritime and shipbuilding sector through IRS’s services in approval, type approval, certification, and compliance.
India’s ambition to enhance its shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing capabilities opens doors for collaboration with German and European technology and equipment companies. This includes opportunities for technology partnerships, joint ventures, and localization efforts in India. Mr. Arun Sharma, Executive Chairman of IRS, emphasized Hamburg’s strategic importance for building relationships within the maritime industry and promoting advanced technologies, particularly in areas like green shipping and digitalization.
Dr. Rolf Strittmatter, CEO of Hamburg Invest, highlighted that IRS’s decision to set up in Hamburg underscores the city’s status as a global maritime services hub, further enriching the international maritime community. He expressed enthusiasm about supporting IRS during its establishment and looks forward to its contributions to Hamburg’s vibrant maritime ecosystem.
