The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has granted a two-year extension to senior IAS officer Shyam Jagannathan, allowing him to remain as Director General (Shipping) in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways until June 1, 2028. Jagannathan, an IAS officer of the 1997 batch from the Assam–Meghalaya cadre, serves in the rank and pay of Additional Secretary to the Government of India.
In his role, Jagannathan leads India’s primary maritime administration, overseeing crucial areas such as merchant shipping regulation, maritime safety, seafarer welfare, training standards, and shipping operations, while also implementing international maritime conventions. This extension aims to ensure continuity in vital reforms that bolster India’s maritime infrastructure and enhance the business landscape in shipping.
Moreover, the Ministry has recently emphasized port modernization, coastal shipping, maritime digitization, and bolstering the competitiveness of the Indian fleet. Officials believe that Jagannathan’s ongoing leadership will help maintain momentum in these initiatives and further India’s position in global maritime trade and logistics.
