The Korean Register (KR) has partnered with Microsoft Korea to develop an AI-driven digital ship classification system, aiming to enhance innovation in the shipbuilding and marine sectors. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed at KR’s headquarters in Busan, marking a significant step in their ongoing collaboration that began with a focus on digital transformation in 2023.
This new agreement expands their partnership from cloud migration to include AI-centered advancements. Together, they will work on AI and data-driven classification innovations, establish an AI-focused ship data center, and explore new digital business models. KR intends to implement generative AI and AI agents in its classification processes, enhancing productivity and quality while accelerating the shift toward digital classification.
Both organizations will also focus on developing ship design support services and optimizing the digital infrastructure within the industry. By utilizing operational and environmental data, they aim to create a robust AI-based data center for ships. Furthermore, they plan to identify new business opportunities, including the commercialization of data and tailored AI platforms.
KR Chairman Lee Young-seok expressed confidence that this collaboration will significantly boost the global competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry. Microsoft Korea CEO Cho Won-woo echoed this sentiment, emphasizing their commitment to supporting KR in spearheading innovation and digital transformation across the sector.
