The Minister of Kerala, VN Vasavan, announced that the Gateway Container operation at the international port of Vizhinjam in Kerala is set to begin in the next four months. Agreements for setting up container scanners at the port are already in place, as informed by Vasavan during a state assembly session. During a question session, V Joy from the CPI-M party inquired about the timeline for the start of the gateway container operation, to which Vasavan confirmed it will commence within four months.
Vasavan revealed that to date, 215 ships have docked at the port of Vizhinjam, totaling 4,22,846 TEU. In February of this year, the port handled 78,833 TEUs from 40 ships, solidifying its position as a key port in the country. The Ministry of Environment recently approved the next two phases of construction for the Transportunship Harbor at the port of Tiefsee. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that these developments aim to ensure the port’s completion by 2028.
The port of Tiefwasser, developed by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd under a public-private partnership model, received its Commercial Commissioning certificate in December last year. The project, estimated at 8,867 billion rupees, marks a significant milestone in India’s maritime infrastructure. The state government is awaiting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s confirmation to commission the port of Vizhinjam. This move signifies a major step forward for Kerala’s maritime industry.
