A week after Yemen’s Houthi rebels advanced past the Internationally Recognized Government (IRG) forces, the situation in South West Yemen seems to have stabilized. The Houthis have taken control of Perim Island and the Ras Menhali peninsula, which overlooks the Bab el Mandeb strait. However, their hold on these strategic locations is still precarious due to the need for resupply and the IRG’s control of the high ground to the east. The Houthis are fortifying their positions with tunnels and defensive structures, making it increasingly difficult for opposing forces to dislodge them.
In newly acquired territories, the Houthis are establishing local governance by setting up municipal administrations, arresting political opponents, and imposing taxes. This organized approach reflects a well-planned takeover strategy, leveraging tribal connections to solidify their political control. The military success of the Houthis can be attributed to their ideological clarity and internal unity, contrasting sharply with the fragmented IRG forces, which are divided into three factions. General Tareq Saleh, a prominent IRG commander, has struggled to unify these factions effectively.
While maritime traffic through the Bab el Mandeb continues, this may be a temporary situation as the Houthis consolidate their power. Their focus is currently on isolating Taiz and expanding into Marib, which contains valuable oil fields. If left unchecked, the Houthis’ influence over the southern Red Sea could grow significantly. Controlling a majority of Yemen’s population but lacking territorial and resource control, their ambitions extend beyond immediate military objectives to long-term regional dominance, particularly if local opposition remains fragmented. As the situation evolves, shipping companies may need to consider alternative routes to navigate an increasingly contested southern Red Sea.
