A consortium led by Newcleo, in collaboration with Bureau Veritas Marine and Offshore and ABMI Groupe, has secured funding through a French maritime sector initiative overseen by Bpifrance. This project has been allocated nearly €1 million (approximately $1.1 million) to advance the conceptual design of a non-self-propelled floating barge that will accommodate multiple reactors, each capable of generating 200 MWe.
Work on the project has commenced and is projected to span around 18 months, as reported by Newcleo. The consortium aims to create a robust framework for the design and functionality of the floating barge, which could play a significant role in energy generation.
Initial studies are concentrating on assessing the power delivery capabilities of the barge for various applications. These include providing energy to isolated regions, supporting ports and industrial hubs, as well as facilitating desalination processes and fuel production. The project underscores the consortium’s commitment to innovative solutions in the maritime and energy sectors, reflecting a growing interest in sustainable energy technologies.
