Maersk, Golden Island Pte Ltd, and PSA Singapore achieved a significant milestone by executing Singapore’s inaugural ethanol bunkering operation at PSA’s Pasir Panjang Terminal. This operation, which took place alongside cargo handling activities, involved utilizing a mass flow meter to bunker approximately 5,000 metric tonnes of ISCC-certified bioethanol into the Maersk Halifax, a dual-fuel container vessel. Notably, this represents the largest volume of ethanol bunkered in a single operation globally.
The event is set to provide valuable data to evaluate how Singapore’s current methanol bunkering technical reference, TR 129, might be adapted for ethanol. Given that ethanol has handling characteristics akin to methanol, it can be used in methanol-compatible engines with appropriate modifications. Insights gained will also determine the applicability of existing mass flow meter systems for future ethanol bunkering operations.
Safety was a critical focus during this operation, with preparatory workshops conducted to enable crew training on handling the marine fuel and emergency protocols. The successful operation signifies an important advancement in PSA’s readiness for a more extensive range of lower-carbon fuel options, reinforcing the maritime industry’s continuous efforts towards decarbonization. Golden Island also emphasized its commitment to sustainable fuel supply in Singapore, ensuring clients can select fuels that align with their decarbonization goals.
