Directors and Heads of Maritime Administrations from Latin America convened for the First Joint Meeting of Directors and Heads of Maritime Administrations (DAMLA 1) in Guatemala City from July 27 to 29. The meeting resulted in a unified regional agenda for maritime cooperation, culminating in the adoption of a resolution and a regional work plan. This framework outlines shared priorities and actions aligned with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) thematic approach to technical cooperation, setting the stage for future collaborative efforts in the region.
A significant outcome of the meeting was the agreement to establish an IMO Regional Presence Office for Latin America. This office aims to enhance regional coordination and facilitate the delivery of technical cooperation, fostering a more unified approach to address common maritime issues. The meeting report will be presented to the IMO’s Technical Cooperation Committee during its seventy-seventh session in June 2027.
Additionally, DAMLA 1 included a workshop focused on gender-responsive leadership and inclusive governance, emphasizing that effective maritime administrations rely on both technical expertise and inclusive practices. Participants expressed enthusiasm for the workshop and advocated for its continuation in future meetings. Overall, DAMLA 1 has laid the groundwork for coordinated technical cooperation across Latin America, marking a significant step toward addressing regional maritime priorities.
