The government has granted in-principle approval for the National Maritime Port City and Carey Islands Port Special Economic Zone (CIPSEZ). These initiatives are projected to contribute approximately RM4.7 billion to the nation’s GDP by 2045. The National Physical Planning Council, led by the Prime Minister, endorsed these developments.
Carey Islands is poised to enhance Selangor and Malaysia’s status as a regional maritime hub, potentially generating up to 115,000 job opportunities. The planned development encompasses a 1,011-hectare port area, which is expected to boost port handling capacity by 42 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) for containers and 38 million tonnes of conventional cargo. Currently, Port Klang ranks among the world’s ten busiest container ports, according to Lloyd’s List One Hundred Ports 2026.
With the establishment of a third terminal on Carey Islands, the government aims to improve the capacity, efficiency, and competitiveness of its ports. The development area will be accessible through several major routes, including the South Klang Valley Expressway and the Shah Alam Expressway. Local authorities, particularly the Kuala Langat Municipal Council, are encouraged to integrate the necessary land-use zones into the Kuala Langat Local Plan 2030 to facilitate these developments.
