NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Ltd. (NSML) has highlighted that localizing specialized maritime training can significantly reduce Nigeria’s foreign exchange spending and lessen reliance on foreign institutions. During a media briefing in Lagos, Managing Director Mr. Abdul-Kadir Ahmed announced that the company’s Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCOE) in Bonny, Rivers, has received certification from the UK Nautical Institute to provide Dynamic Positioning (DP) training.

Ahmed emphasized that local training would enhance Nigeria’s maritime workforce capabilities. The certification allows Nigerian maritime professionals to obtain internationally recognized DP qualifications domestically, thus eliminating the need for overseas training. He noted that the center is now authorized to conduct various DP-related courses, marking a significant achievement for the maritime sector and affirming the center’s adherence to global standards.

It features advanced learning infrastructure and state-of-the-art simulators. Ahmed also mentioned that the certification would enhance the employability of Nigerian seafarers by providing access to globally accepted qualifications.

Furthermore, the center already holds DNV ISO 9001 certification for quality management and complies with DNV ST-0029 standards for maritime simulators and training facilities. The MCOE also offers accredited programs from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), covering various advanced maritime topics. NSML aims to pursue further accreditations to establish the center as a leading maritime training hub, supporting Nigeria’s goal of becoming Africa’s foremost maritime nation.
