A tanker was reportedly hit by an unidentified projectile late Monday while navigating just east of the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the vessel experienced an impact on its port side about 8 nautical miles east of Limah, Oman, as it moved southbound. Although the collision ignited a fire onboard, there were no reported injuries or environmental damage, and investigations into the incident are underway.
This attack occurs amid a resurgence in commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, following a ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran last month. However, security agencies continue to caution that threats in the region remain high. The reported incident took place near a newly expanded southern transit corridor established for safe navigation after previous mine threats had rendered the traditional routes unsafe.
The Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) has reaffirmed that the maritime security threat level in the Strait of Hormuz is still “SUBSTANTIAL” but indicated that the expanded corridor remains open for commercial traffic. Vessels are advised to operate with caution, ensuring that navigation protocols, such as activating AIS and maintaining communication, are followed while remaining aware of ongoing mine hazards. UKMTO urges vessels in the area to report any suspicious activity as investigations proceed.
