ClassNK has granted approval in principle (AiP) to Mitsubishi Shipbuilding for their Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage system (OCCS). This certification validates the system’s feasibility in terms of regulatory and safety standards. The OCCS is part of the growing interest in CO2 capture methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships, alongside fuel conversion efforts.

As the development of OCCS technology progresses, ClassNK has released the ‘Guidelines for Shipboard CO2 Capture and Storage Systems’ to support its smooth introduction. These guidelines outline safety requirements for OCCS and its installation on ships. ClassNK reviewed Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s system design based on these guidelines and, upon confirming compliance with the requirements, issued the AiP to the company.

The AiP from ClassNK signifies a significant step forward in the implementation of OCCS technology on ships.
