Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s largest container port, has achieved a notable ascent in the global ranking, moving from 28th to 21st place in Alphaliner’s review of the top 30 container ports for the first half of 2026. This improvement reflects JNPA’s commitment to operational efficiency, expedited cargo handling, and enhanced multimodal connectivity.
The port demonstrated its effectiveness during global trade disruptions in early 2026, particularly stemming from the US-Iran conflict. JNPA implemented proactive measures to streamline cargo movement and manage additional operational demands, bolstering its role as a reliable player in international trade.
Gaurav Dayal, Chairperson of JNPA, emphasized that the port’s rise is a testament to the collaborative efforts of terminal operators, stakeholders, and the broader port community. He noted that their joint contributions have fortified JNPA’s cargo-handling capabilities amid complex global trade challenges.
In the period from April to July 2026, JNPA processed approximately 2.99 million TEUs and 36.62 million tonnes of cargo, marking increases of 14.37% and 11.95%, respectively, from the prior year. With a current capacity of 10.1 million TEUs, JNPA aims to expand its infrastructure to accommodate 12 million TEUs in the coming years.
