Seafarers’ Rights International has commemorated the Day of the Seafarer by advocating for enhanced international collaboration to safeguard seafarers impacted by geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions, and conflicts. This year’s theme, “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks,” highlights the precarious situation faced by commercial shipping, especially in light of recent incidents in the Strait of Hormuz that demonstrate how swiftly political and security crises can disrupt maritime operations. Many seafarers feel compelled to navigate high-risk areas due to concerns about job security, leaving them vulnerable to danger.

Currently, approximately 11,000 seafarers remain stranded, and 14 have tragically lost their lives amid ongoing conflicts. Professor Hilton Staniland, CEO of Seafarers’ Rights International, emphasized the critical role that ships and seafarers play in global trade, noting that any disruption can have far-reaching consequences. He pointed out that geopolitical events have placed seafarers in harm’s way, exposing them to risks of injury, detention, and even death.

Staniland further stressed that recent events illustrate the limitations of individual efforts in addressing these challenges. The complex nature of risks faced by crews necessitates coordinated action among various stakeholders, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO), International Labour Organization (ILO), governments, shipowners, and industry bodies. He concluded that the lessons learned from these circumstances underscore the necessity for collaboration among all relevant parties, making it clear that cooperation is not merely an option but an imperative.
