The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is actively conducting search and rescue operations for the crew of the Vietnamese cargo ship Khoi Nguyen 18, which sank near Kagitingan Reef in the West Philippine Sea. As of July 28, 2026, at 4 PM, the PCG’s BRP Malapascua (MRRV-4403) is on its sixth search leg to find the 14 missing crew members. The vessel has issued a radio call to nearby ships for assistance and to remain alert for any survivors.
Despite challenging sea conditions, the BRP Malapascua is systematically searching the designated area while collaborating with other vessels involved in the operation. To enhance their humanitarian efforts, the PCG has deployed additional resources, including the Marine Science Technical Service and Coast Guard Medical and Nursing Services.
The Khoi Nguyen 18 sank on July 25, 2026, carrying 62 crew members. The PCG Command Center is in close coordination with the Vietnamese Coast Guard for operational updates to inform their search efforts. They are also employing the Search and Rescue Optimal Planning System to optimize the response and increase the chances of locating the missing individuals.
According to Chinese state media, teams from China have reportedly rescued some Vietnamese sailors near the reef currently under Chinese control.
