The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has introduced ADMIRALTY Digital Sailing Directions (ADSD), transforming traditional navigational guides into an interactive digital format. This innovation aims to enhance passage planning and situational awareness, making navigation more dynamic and accessible. The launch is part of UKHO’s commitment to developing digital solutions that meet the evolving needs of mariners and support the maritime sector’s digital transformation.
ADSD retains the authoritative content of ADMIRALTY Sailing Directions but presents it in a user-friendly format. Key features include an integrated geo-display that allows mariners to visualize navigational information and coastal views, improving situational awareness. Enhanced search and bookmarking functions streamline the process of locating essential details for passage planning, such as port information and navigational warnings.
Developed with input from navigating officers worldwide, ADSD has been positively received, with 88% of users finding it intuitive and 91% agreeing that the geo-display enhances understanding. The initial release includes 38 popular volumes covering major shipping routes, focusing on the primary corridor between Northern Europe and East Asia. Full global coverage is expected by the end of 2026, ensuring mariners have access to up-to-date information across busy trade routes.
