DGMA Releases Model Question Papers for MEO and ETO Exams

India’s Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA), formerly DG Shipping, in Mumbai has published a fresh set of model question papers for marine engineering competency exams. The papers, dated October 2026, were posted on the official DGMA website on 5 November 2026.

Four sets have been released: Marine Engineer Officer (MEO) Class I; MEO Class II (Parts A and B); MEO Class IV (Parts A and B); and Electro-Technical Officer (ETO). Each set is a separate PDF file.

The Class II set has one model paper for each written subject. These include Mechanics and Hydromechanics, Thermodynamics and Heat Transmission, Naval Architecture, Ship Safety and Environmental Protection, Marine Engineering Knowledge (General, Motor and Steam), Marine Electrotechnology and Marine Engineering Practice. Most papers carry 100 marks and run for three hours, with long-answer questions that mix calculations, sketches and descriptive answers. Candidates usually answer six questions of equal marks.

The papers also carry standard instructions. Neat, clear answers and well-drawn sketches earn credit, and blank pages in the answer book must be struck off.

The release comes soon after DGMA issued a seat booking procedure for MEO Class IV and Class II written exams, as more engineers compete for exam slots at the Mercantile Marine Departments.

For marine engineers and ETOs preparing for their certificates of competency, the model papers are a useful guide to the exam pattern, the level of detail expected and the time needed for each answer. Candidates can practise full papers under exam conditions before their written tests.
