Dominguez highlighted the often-overlooked plight of seafarers, who face significant dangers yet receive minimal attention from the global media. He expressed concern that these individuals feel neglected, especially as news coverage tends to focus on the broader impacts of conflict on nations and the economy, rather than on the innocent lives of seafarers caught in the crossfire. He pointed out the tragic loss of 14 seafarers due to over 40 attacks on vessels during the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the need for urgent action.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) chief has actively engaged with seafarers who have managed to escape the region, collaborating with governments, shipowners, and flag states to assist those still stranded. His efforts are concentrated on providing essential resources such as food, water, fuel, and medical assistance, while also ensuring that crew members maintain contact with their families. Dominguez commended the resilience of seafarers, noting their support for one another in these perilous circumstances.
Following the attack on the vessel Settebello, Dominguez condemned the violence and underscored the importance of protecting civilian shipping and navigation. He reiterated that safeguarding the lives of seafarers is a shared responsibility that must be prioritized. Recently, the IMO announced a temporary suspension of its evacuation operation in the Gulf of Oman due to another vessel attack, pending further evaluation of the security situation.
