Inmarsat Maritime, a Viasat business, has donated a bridge simulator to Warsash Maritime School in the UK. The simulator, previously located at Inmarsat’s former headquarters in London, allows students to practice responses to distress situations in a realistic environment. It can display Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) operations, crucial for emergency services worldwide. Inmarsat donated the simulator following its move to a new facility in London earlier this year.
Students at Warsash Maritime School can use the simulator to navigate a ship out of life-threatening situations, preparing them for high-pressure scenarios at sea. The simulator enhances their technical and mental readiness for practical maritime situations. The school plans to incorporate the simulator into its GMDSS course, providing students with hands-on experience in distress and radio communications at sea.
Inmarsat’s donation reflects its commitment to maritime safety and education. The company’s Safety Team is working with the International Maritime Organization to include the simulator in the Global Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS). This donation aligns with Inmarsat’s efforts to promote maritime safety through technology, training, and expert support. The simulator is expected to benefit students at Warsash Maritime School for years to come, enhancing their knowledge and potentially saving lives at sea.
