Searchers were unsuccessful in locating a crew member who fell off a cargo ship in the ocean off Southern California, according to the Coast Guard. The search effort lasted nearly 15 hours before being suspended on Tuesday evening, as stated by the Coast Guard.

The incident occurred when a bulk cargo carrier reported the sailor overboard around 5 a.m. approximately 14 miles southwest of Point Conception while traveling through the Santa Barbara Channel towards the Port of Long Beach. In response, the Coast Guard issued an alert to nearby vessels and deployed a helicopter, small boat, and cutter to conduct the search.

Chief Warrant Officer John Rose, the search coordinator at Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach, expressed the difficulty in deciding to halt an active search, stating that it is only done after exhaustive efforts have been made to locate the missing individual.
