India Launches Autonomous Vessel Under Sagarmala Project

The Indian Navy showcased cutting-edge innovation through the launch of Sagarmala Parikrama, featuring advancements in autonomous maritime technology developed by Indian startups. The autonomous surface vessel, Matangi, created by Sagar Defence Engineering, was inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh during the Swavlamban 2024 conference at Bharat Mandapam. Matangi is planned to traverse an 850-nautical-mile journey from Mumbai to Tuticorin autonomously, utilizing indigenous navigation and collision avoidance software.

Having completed the initial leg of its journey from Mumbai to Karwar covering around 350 nautical miles overnight, Matangi now has an additional 1000 kilometers to reach Tuticorin. This milestone highlights the role of startups and MSMEs in driving advanced technologies and aligns with the theme of Swavlamban 2024, emphasizing strength and power through innovation and indigenization. The mission aims to showcase India’s growing capabilities in science, technology, and innovation driven by indigenous efforts.
