India is emphasizing maritime security and the protection of sea lanes as key components of its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028–29 term. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar officially launched India’s campaign at the UN headquarters in New York, highlighting the theme “SHANTI – Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity.” He underscored India’s commitment to a free and rules-based maritime order, stressing the importance of addressing maritime security issues like piracy, the safety of seafarers, humanitarian assistance, and global trade flow.

Jaishankar pointed out the growing risks faced by seafarers amid geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Gulf, where recent disruptions have affected global shipping and energy supplies. India’s proactive role in ensuring maritime security has included anti-piracy and counter-narcotics operations across critical shipping routes. The minister also reaffirmed India’s commitment to promoting search and rescue operations and disaster relief as part of its contribution to global maritime governance.

In addition to maritime security, India’s UNSC campaign will also prioritize representing the Global South, reformed multilateralism, and addressing emerging threats, including those posed by artificial intelligence. Furthermore, Jaishankar called for intensified international efforts against terror financing, advocating evidence-based mechanisms for listing terrorist organizations. India will compete against Tajikistan for the Asia-Pacific seat in the UNSC elections in June 2027, marking its ninth tenure on the Council if successful.
