The container shipping segment is experiencing rapid changes with a growing orderbook, record-level charter and secondhand market, and significant capacity additions in progress. MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has emerged as a leader in this evolving market, surpassing competitors and driving growth.
According to Alphaliner and Linerlytica’s mid-year updates, the container shipping segment has reached a new capacity threshold, with over 30 million TEU worldwide for the first time. MSC, founded in 1970, has seen explosive growth in recent years, surpassing Maersk in capacity and market share.
MSC’s strategic acquisitions, including former Maersk vessels, have propelled the company towards a market share of 20 percent and a capacity nearing 6 million TEU. With more vessels on order, MSC is expected to reach over 7 million TEU by 2025, solidifying its position in the industry.
Analysts predict continued growth and changes in the container shipping segment, with new orders, vessel sizes, and alliances on the horizon. The industry is expected to see further shifts in market dynamics as carriers respond to the evolving landscape.
