The ambitious project set to cover over 166 square kilometers—approximately 18% of Nicobar’s total area of 910 square kilometers—has an estimated cost of Rs. 80,000 crore. Key components include an international container transshipment terminal (ICTT), a new dual-use international airport, a township, supporting infrastructure, and a power plant aimed at achieving energy self-sufficiency for the island.

This initiative is designed to bolster the maritime integration of major Indian ports, creating a more cohesive domestic and global shipping network. By establishing the Nicobar ICTT, India aims to become a significant transshipment hub, reducing reliance on foreign ports for container transshipment. Currently, around 25% of containers originating in India are transshipped through international ports, a trend that this project seeks to reverse.

The development of this infrastructure is expected to enhance trade efficiency and position India as a key player in the global shipping industry. Ultimately, the project not only promises to transform the economic landscape of the Nicobar Islands but also aims to strengthen India’s overall maritime capabilities.
