Port and maritime unions are urgently calling for enhanced safety measures to protect Indian seafarers navigating conflict-affected shipping routes. This demand arises amid rising security threats faced by commercial vessels operating in regions marked by armed conflicts and regional instability. Unions are urging authorities and shipping companies to implement additional safeguards for Indian crew members assigned to high-risk areas.
As a vital segment of the global maritime workforce, Indian seafarers are employed across various types of vessels, including container ships, tankers, and bulk carriers. Recent disruptions and security concerns on major shipping routes have amplified anxiety regarding their safety and working conditions. In response, unions are advocating for improved risk-assessment procedures prior to vessels entering conflict-prone waters, along with adequate insurance, compensation, and emergency support for crews facing elevated risks.
Furthermore, unions stress the necessity for enhanced communication among shipowners, government agencies, and seafarers, ensuring that crew members are well-informed about security conditions and contingency plans before embarking on voyages. They assert that crew safety should be a top priority in decisions regarding operations through high-risk maritime corridors, pushing for ongoing discussions with government and industry stakeholders to secure stronger protective measures for seafarers.
