Indian Shipping Ministry Assures Safety Amid Hormuz Regional Tensions

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has confirmed that all Indian seafarers and vessels near the Strait of Hormuz are safe, with no maritime incidents reported in the last 72 hours. During an inter-ministerial briefing, Opesh Kumar Sharma, the Director of the ministry, stated that India is closely monitoring regional shipping routes, ensuring the safety of Indian-flagged ships and seafarers on foreign vessels. The Directorate General of Shipping’s control room remains operational, maintaining communication with seafarers and their families.

Sharma also reassured the public that there has been no attack on the LPG vessel Nanda Devi, emphasizing the stability of the situation from India’s shipping safety perspective. He noted that the ministry is actively coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs and various maritime stakeholders to ensure the welfare of seafarers and the continuity of maritime operations.

Additionally, the Directorate General of Shipping has facilitated the safe repatriation of over 3,474 Indian seafarers from affected regions in the Gulf, with 28 returning in the past 72 hours. Despite the regional tensions, port operations within India remain unaffected, with no reported congestion. The ministry continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of Indian seafarers.
