India’s Diplomatic Efforts to Safeguard Shipping Routes in the Black Sea

India is engaging in discussions with Russia and Ukraine to enhance shipping safety in the Black Sea, according to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Jaishankar emphasized India’s long-standing advocacy for maritime safety and its increased involvement in recent months. The conversations aim to address urgent issues, including grain and energy exports, as well as strategies to prevent attacks on shipping.

While Jaishankar refrained from disclosing specific proposals or a timeline for the talks, he acknowledged the ongoing fighting in the region is jeopardizing commercial shipping. Notably, recent attacks, such as the July strike on MV Omorfi that killed an Indian seafarer and an attack on MV Golden Leo, have compelled India to raise concerns with both nations.
