On September 17, NYK Line, in collaboration with Japan Marine United Corporation, Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc., and Kokuka Sangyo Co., Ltd., successfully executed the world’s first ship-to-ship (STS) ammonia bunkering operation. This significant milestone took place at Japan Marine United Corporation’s Ariake Shipyard, where ammonia was transferred from the ammonia carrier Shoei Maru to an ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier (AFMGC) set for delivery in November 2026.
The operation was meticulously planned, involving extensive discussions among the participating companies. Prior to the transfer, safe operating procedures and work processes were established to ensure the operation was conducted safely. This initiative not only marks a technological advancement but also provides valuable insights into the safe supply of fuel.
The ammonia carrier Shoei Maru, owned by Kokuka Sangyo Co., Ltd., has a gross tonnage of 998 tons and measures 71.5 meters in length and 12.5 meters in breadth. It primarily transports ammonia for Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company’s Niigata Plant, playing a crucial role in the burgeoning ammonia fuel sector. This pioneering operation sets the stage for future developments in ammonia as a marine fuel source.
