Operations at the Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal, located at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), were suspended following a tragic dockside accident that resulted in one worker’s death and two others sustaining injuries.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred when empty containers fell from an anchored vessel due to heavy rain and strong winds, impacting trucks involved in terminal operations. The dock workers were performing routine tasks when the containers toppled, leading to the casualties.
In the wake of the accident, JNPA has assured support for those affected and launched a comprehensive investigation, including a root-cause analysis. The port authority also confirmed adherence to established safety protocols and operational procedures throughout its terminals.
This incident compounds existing operational challenges at Nhava Sheva, where ongoing monsoon conditions have already disrupted port activities. The terminal’s closure is expected to highlight the importance of container-handling safety and the need for effective weather-related risk management at major Indian ports.
