Maharashtra has earmarked Dighi in Raigad district for a proposed ₹20,000-crore greenfield shipbuilding cluster, with Mazagon Dock set to spearhead the initiative. This project aims to create a significant maritime manufacturing hub, bolstering India’s shipbuilding capabilities.
The Dighi site was chosen for its advantageous proximity to existing port infrastructure and an extensive industrial land bank covering over 6,000 acres. This location offers robust multimodal connectivity through road and rail, essential for supporting shipyard operations and related marine services.
Mazagon Dock’s involvement is expected to lend the project institutional strength and technical expertise, which could attract additional suppliers and long-term investments. Officials are currently conducting a techno-economic feasibility study to determine the ideal project structure and ensure successful implementation.
This initiative forms part of Maharashtra’s broader strategy to establish itself as a premier destination for shipbuilding and marine manufacturing. By integrating various facilities such as shipyards, repair shops, and testing infrastructures, the cluster could emerge as one of the largest shipbuilding investments in western India, significantly enhancing the state’s maritime infrastructure.
