Gujarat has introduced a shipbuilding subsidy of up to ₹50 crore for local shipyards, aimed at enhancing India’s maritime industry and promoting domestic vessel production. Under this initiative, shipyards can receive financial support amounting to 8% of eligible expenses or a maximum of ₹50 crore for constructing both small and large vessels.
This subsidy is part of Gujarat’s strategy to foster shipbuilding and repair clusters, particularly in regions like the Gulf of Kutch and Pipavav, along the state’s extensive coastline. The funding is expected to bolster investments in shipyard infrastructure, including essential facilities such as slipways, jetties, cranes, and dredging capabilities, as well as training and research and development centers.
Gujarat’s efforts complement the Union Government’s ₹69,725 crore Shipbuilding Package and the extended Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme, both of which aim to enhance India’s global shipbuilding standing by 2036. These initiatives are projected to generate over 150,000 jobs and unlock 4.5 million gross tonnes of shipbuilding capacity, positioning India among the top five shipbuilding nations by 2047.
Additionally, the state’s Shipbuilding and Repair Policy offers a 5% subsidy on goods and services sourced from MSMEs registered in Gujarat, thereby supporting local industries and strengthening the shipbuilding ecosystem. This incentive positions Gujarat as a pivotal maritime growth hub within India’s Act East and Sagarmala initiatives, attracting investments from various sectors, including defense and shipping.
