ABS has formalized a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with three major Korean maritime organizations to further develop international standards for next-generation smart ships and shipyards. The collaboration includes the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute (KOMERI), the Korean Offshore & Shipbuilding Association (KOSHIPA), and the Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding (RIMS). Over the next five years, the partners aim to establish global benchmarks that leverage digital technology, smart manufacturing, and advanced maritime systems.
To kick off this initiative, ABS is already working on preliminary standards in two key areas: digital production and traceability protocols for additively manufactured components, along with vent mast design for hydrogen-powered vessels. Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, highlighted that this partnership capitalizes on ABS’s long-standing relationships within Korea’s shipbuilding sector, emphasizing its role in fostering safe technological advancements.
This MOU also builds upon a previous agreement with the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) to enhance the international standardization of smart technologies within the maritime industry. The partnership reflects ABS’s deepening engagement with Korea’s maritime community, further reinforced by recent collaborations through the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Center.
Joo-Hyoung Choi, Managing Director of KOMERI, added that international standards serve as crucial gateways for market entry and competitiveness in the global arena. By combining Korea’s standardization strengths with ABS’s classification expertise, the partnership expects to lower barriers for Korean manufacturers in international markets. As emerging technologies transition into practical applications, ABS remains committed to supporting the necessary standards and safety frameworks that the maritime industry requires.
